Title: Power Systems Research at Argonne National Laboratory

Abstract: Decarbonization of the energy sector requires innovations and collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, such as industry, regulators, and research community. The U.S. Department of Energy’s national laboratories play a unique role in supporting the decarbonization of the energy sector by developing practical solutions for electric power and overall energy sector. The research conducted by national labs often bridges the gap between the academic research and practical applications of science and engineering solutions needed by the industry.  In this seminar, we will provide an overview of power systems R&D activities at Argonne National Laboratory and highlight a few selected projects. More specifically, the seminar will cover the research conducted by the Center for Energy, Environmental, and Economic Analysis (CEEESA) in the areas of power systems and electricity markets research, advanced grid modeling, optimization, and analytics. A brief overview of several computer models developed by Argonne researchers will also be presented.

Speakers Bio: Vladimir Koritarov is the Director of the Center for Energy, Environmental and Economic Systems Analysis (CEEESA) at Argonne National Laboratory. He has more than 35 years of experience in the analysis of power system capacity expansion options, production cost and reliability analysis, modeling of hydro and pumped storage hydropower, hydro-thermal coordination, modeling and valuation of energy storage, integration of variable renewables, and electric sector restructuring issues. Mr. Koritarov has managed numerous energy and environmental projects and provided technical assistance to more than 30 countries. Before joining Argonne in 1991, Mr. Koritarov worked for eight years as power system planner in the Union of Yugoslav Electric Power Industry.

Feng Qiu received his Ph.D. from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2013. He is a principal computational scientist and a section leader with the Energy Systems Division at Argonne National Laboratory. His current research interests include power system modeling and optimization, electricity markets, power grid resilience, machine learning and data analytics.
