Developments in AC and DC Protection of HVDC Systems
Abstract: High-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems are becoming more common in modern power systems. The HVDC specific protection must be coordinated with the protective systems of the ac network. Older HVDC systems use line commuted converter (LCC) systems, which most new systems use voltage source converter (VSC) systems. The differe
nces in basic operation of these converters result in difference in their response to ac and dc side faults, resulting in differing protection requirements. AC and DC side protection schemes will be discussed for LCC and VSC converter stations. Converter protection schemes are coordinated with converter controls. VSC systems create additional challenges for both AC and DC protection. Fault detection and protection schemes for point-to-point HVDC systems will be discussed, including differences in practices for systems with overhead lines and underground or undersea cables. HVDC grids introduce additional challenges for design of protection schemes, and are driving development of HVDC circuit breaker technologies.
Bio: Brian K. Johnson is the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Endowed Chair in Power Engineering and University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Idaho. He received a PhD degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His teaching and research interests include power system protection, integration of inverter-based generation, HVDC transmission, FACTS devices, power systems transients, and power system resilient control. He is an associate editor for IEEE Power & Energy Magazine and a member of the IEEE Press Editorial Board.
