Title: Using magnetism to ensure in-flight safety

Description: The mechanical condition of aircraft parts is of critical importance, as flight safety is the number one concern in most aerospace applications. The presence of mechanical stress alters the magnetic properties of steels, so this knowledge can be used to monitor health non-destructively (without destroying the material under test) by measuring the magnetization of steel. One of these non-destructive methods is the magnetic Barkhausen noise method, by which we can relate the magnetic “noise” emanating from the material to the stress state. It is a cost-effective and fast method by which one can monitor steel health, thus it is used to avoid catastrophic failures, and possibly loss of life.
