Title: Control of Microgrids for Islanded Operation for an Enabled Smart Grid

Speaker: Hemanshu R. Pota, associate professor, University of New South Wales

Abstract: Environmental concerns due to the use of fossil fuels and the ageing power grid have forced a rethink on the ways of electricity generation and consumption in future. Many novel ideas are being explored for the reorganization of the grid and microgrid is one of them which has the potential to reduce losses and increase the reliability of electricity supply. Typically microgrids are autonomous generation and load units that are capable of interconnection with other microgrids or the main grid.

Many microgrids may have only renewable energy resources connected with the microgrid via inverters. For a stable microgrid operation generation must match the load and the changes in the load must be shared proportionately by the generators. This requires new methods of control for inverter-interfaced generators in microgrids.

This presentation will share some ideas on the emerging smart grids and how microgrids fit into the future grid, and present work on combined robust and droop control schemes for power sharing in microgrids with inverter-interfaced generation.
