Event Type

Title: Superconductor Opportunities for Utility and Transportation Use of Renewables

Abstract:. This seminar will address use of liquid-nitrogen-cooled superconductors for high-capacity HVDC long-distance transmission. A next-generation superconducting technology for electric transmission will be described, including its capability to operate with 5-10x the transfer capacity of conventional lines for a given voltage level. Deployment of this technology along interstate highways will also be addressed. The integration of this design with new and innovative transportation systems will be explored together with the impact of using this technology to interconnect the Midwestern US and the California energy markets.

Bio: Dale Osborn worked 44 years in the power industry as a transmission planner, a power resource planner and with HVDC and SVC system studies. He has a BS and MS of EE from the University of Nebraska. He has worked for the Nebraska Public Power District, with ASEA-ABB on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and Static Var Compensators, and he retired in 2017 following 16 years as Principal Adviser with the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). His current focus concerns the design of a Voltage Source Converter High Voltage Direct Current Network which would tie part of the US Eastern Interconnection, Western Interconnection (WECC), and Texas Interconnection (ERCOT) together to exchange Frequency Response, Wind and Solar Energy, and Load Diversity.

Although Dale will give his part of the seminar live (In 3043 Coover), the seminar will also involve virtual participation from Kevin Dunn of VIER, a company developing the next generation of superconducting electric transmission.

Bio: Kevin Dunn is the Chief Commercial Officer at VEIR. He is a subject matter expert on pricing, commercial structures and risk profiles in the global energy infrastructure space, specializing in EPC contracting and energy solutions.  At VEIR, he leads their commercialization and go-to-market efforts to position VEIR’s transmission solution in the market. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University, a Masters of Engineering Management from the University of Kansas. He is a registered professional engineer, and is a six sigma black belt. He lives in Kansas City with his wife and four kids.
