Title: Dedicated protection for multicast connections in the Internet backbone networks

Speaker: Mirzad Mohandespour, ECpE Graduate Student

Abstract: While network links in backbone networks offer high bandwidth, they also present a challenge in protection; failure of a backbone link even for a short period of time could mean huge loss in data. Such link failures could be even more costly in the case of multicast connections; a single failure can disrupt multiple receivers in a multicast tree. Moreover there are multicast applications that demand highly available or always-on connections. Such applications require instantaneous recovery from failures which could be satisfied by dedicated (as opposed to shared) protection.

Recently the idea of robust network coding has been suggested as an alternative to the traditional multicast dedicated protection techniques in backbone networks. In this talk I will address both traditional and recent ideas in multicast dedicated protection. I will also introduce my work together with Dr. Ahmed Kamal on this subject.
