Title: Microwave and Millimeter Wave Sensors and Imaging Systems
Abstract: Microwave and Millimeter-wave signals span the frequency range of 300MHz – 30 GHz and 30 GHz – 300 GHz respectively. Signals at these frequencies can easily penetrate inside dielectric materials and interact with their inner structures. These interactions enables imaging, material characterization, and sensing. At millimeter wave frequencies in particular, the relatively small wavelengths and wide bandwidths associated with these signals enable the production of 3D high-resolution images of materials and structures. Raster scanning of a reflectometer, using a typically bulky mechanical 1D or 2D positioning system, has been an effective technique for producing high fidelity microwave and millimeter wave images. Ultimately, imaging techniques must produce high-resolution 3D images, become real-time, and be implemented using portable systems particularly for field deployment. To this end, the development of innovative antenna array based imaging systems and robust back-propagation algorithms have resulted in viable solutions in particular for security, nondestructive testing (NDT), and biomedical applications. This presentation provides an overview of microwave and millimeter wave real-time imaging systems designs, highlights challenges and introduces techniques to overcome them. These challenges include designing small and efficient wideband antennas, integrating antennas with the high frequency electronics, and satisfying spatial sampling requirements. Overcoming these limitations requires a holistic approach incorporating optimized hardware designs, novel measurement techniques, and image reconstruction algorithms.
Bio: Mohammad Tayeb Ghasr is an Associate Research Professor with the Applied Microwave Nondestructive Testing Laboratory (amntl), Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). He received his B.S. in electrical engineering degree (Magna Cum laude) from the American University of Sharjah (AUS), Sharjah, in 2002 and his M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rolla, in 2004, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), MO, USA in 2009. His research interest is in the area of microwave and millimeter-wave instrumentation and measurement and its application for holographical measurement and 3D imaging. His other interests include RF circuits, antennas, material evaluation, and nondestructive testing. He has over 55 journal papers, and over 85 conference proceedings and presentations. He has 19 awarded and pending patents in the areas of microwave and millimeter wave imaging and nondestructive testing. Dr. Ghasr is a senior member of IEEE. He is also a member of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). He is a recipient of the 2013 H. A. Wheeler Prize Paper Award of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society for the paper titled “Portable Real-Time Microwave Camera at 24 GHz”. He is also the recipient of the 2013 I&M Outstanding Young Engineer Award of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, the recipient of the 2014 IEEE J. Barry Oakes Advancement Award, and the 2015 American Society for Nondestructive testing (ASNT) Research Award for Innovation.
