Most fun work project: When I worked at IBM previously, I worked on some of the dynamic power cooling technology that allowed IBM servers to perform load-balancing to achieve optimal power savings. The project used such new open-source protocols that I was actually able to contribute ideas on how the new protocol should be designed. Plus, it was really cool to know that my efforts would help companies all around the world reduce their energy consumption!

How Iowa State impacted my career: Iowa State provided me with the education and opportunities that I needed to become a successful computer engineer. I got to meet some of the most amazing professors and people that really inspired me to follow a career in computer engineering. They taught me the latest technologies being used in the industry, gave me hands-on experience, and opened doors that would have otherwise never been opened.

What I enjoyed most about Iowa State: The environment—it allows you to submerse yourself in whatever activities, interests, or pursuits you enjoy most. Iowa State may start out feeling like a large campus, but it’s not long before it becomes your own little community. Soon you know the names of all the buildings, you know where your favorite study spots are, and you’re addicted the Iowa State Daily crossword puzzles. Your classmates become the friends that you pass on the sidewalk, and your professors become the mentors that you discuss ideas with after class.

I still remember having late night study sessions with friends in Coover Hall—getting so excited about a project that we would code until our hands were sore. I still remember going to football games with friends and seeing shows at Stephens Auditorium. Not only did I get a great education at Iowa State, but I got some of the best memories of my life there.

Why I became a computer engineer: When I was in middle school, my dad brought home our very first computer—a Micron desktop. I remember him cracking open the case to show us what was inside, and being mystified by all the wires and cables and strange looking parts. I wanted to know how it was that they could take an electrical signal and turn it into the images and data that I saw on the screen. It was then that I was hooked.

Advice to students: If you love technology, stick with it! There are so many neat, exciting, and cutting-edge opportunities out there for people with degrees in computer and electrical engineering. Find some reliable study buddies that will encourage you to succeed, and get to know your professors. College is a great place to make connections that will help you throughout your career!
