Title: Sensing for Predictive Plant Health Monitoring

Abstract: Aside from plant nutrition, plant and soil health are important for sustainable agriculture. Being part of the nature, plants are constantly exposed to various biotic (pests, pathogens etc.) and abiotic (nutrition deficiency/overdose etc.) stresses. Plants regulate stress responses, growth, interactions with other organisms and development through phytohormones. One response to stress is the activation of Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) pathways and releasing signalling hormones: Salicylic acid (SA) & Jasmonic acid (JA) against biotic stresses. Abscisic acid (ABA) & Ethylene (ET), against abiotic stresses. SA among these is a primary phytohormone and is produced in relatively low concentrations (of the order of /). The concentrations can increase 10 to 100-fold under stress. Monitoring SA concentrations using rapid on-the-go sensors will help monitor plant health and provide insights into the processes of defense in plants. A portable SA electrochemical sensing system is presented here.

Bio: Bhuwan Kashyap received the B.Tech. degree in electronics and communication engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India, in 2014. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering with Iowa State University, Ames, IA, USA. His current research interests include designing sensing technologies for sustainable agriculture, microwave engineering, micro-electro-mechanical systems, digital circuit design, lab-on-a-chip-based systems and clean energy harvesting devices.
