Title: Mitigating Low-Frequency Oscillations in Large-Scale Power Grids Using an Adaptive Damping Controller

Abstract: Low-frequency oscillation has been a significant threat to secure and economic operation of large-scale power systems. Recently, multiple severe natural oscillation events with insufficient damping control have occurred in the interconnected power grid of Continental Europe. Also, multiple severe forced oscillation events have been observed across the North American interconnections. One of such events occurred in the Eastern Interconnection (EI) on January 11th of 2019. With the increasing integration of renewables and retirement of conventional generators, the similar severe oscillation events could be experienced in North American interconnections if not sufficiently controlled.

Bio: Dr. Lin Zhu is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the Engineering Research Center CURENT jointly supported by NSF/DOE and the department of EECS, The University of Tennessee. He received his B.S. degree and Ph.D. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2005 and 2011, respectively, both in Electrical Engineering. His research interests include power system dynamic, renewable energy integration, microgrid, and power system protection. Many of his research accomplishments have been translated into product prototypes ready for commercialization or actual products. For example, the developed microgrid controller can enable a microgrid to operate with dynamic boundary and is currently field tested at a local utility Electric Power Board at Chattanooga, TN. The developed software package is adopted by several large utilities in China to verify relay coordination online. Dr. Lin Zhu is an Associate Editor of IEEE Access and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is the co-PI of two NSF awards and the lead PI of multiple industry projects.
