Title: Monitoring and Mitigation of Voltage Instability in Transmission and Distribution Grids with Distributed Resources using Data-Driven Approach
Abstract: A key operational challenge for the successful performance of the power grid is to ensure voltage stability of the overall system. Recent economic and regulatory shifts have led to the retirement of fossil fuel based generation and installation of renewable resources, both in transmission and distribution systems over the past few years. The increasing penetration of renewables has increased the interaction between transmission & distribution systems, making the system dynamics more complex to ensure voltage stability based only on offline analysis. Hence, online solutions that are informed through offline analysis that exploit the flexible nature of smart inverters to control real and reactive powers can help to maintain power system stability with variable renewable resources. This presentation will focus on methods to monitor and mitigate voltage instability using data-driven models while exploiting the reactive power support capability of the distributed renewable resources along with demand side control over various timescales. Applications to both transmission and distribution will be presented that demonstrate the utility of the proposed methodology.
Bio: Dr. Amar Ramapuram Matavalam is a post-doctoral researcher at Iowa State University. He completed his Bachelors and Masters from IIT-Madras in 2011 and completed his PhD in electrical engineering with a specialization in power engineering in 2019. He received the Research Excellence Award for his PhD in 2019. He was an Edison engineer in General Electric from 2011-2013 working on protection devices. He has received second place in the worldwide learning to run the power network (L2RPN) competition on reinforcement learning for stable power grid operation in 2019. His research interests are in power system dynamics, voltage stability monitoring & control, data-driven analytics for power systems, interaction of T&D systems and reinforcement learning for power grid operations.
