Iowa State University Power Group Seminar is in person and online in zoom
Abstract: A typical utility scale wind farm system, with an emphasis on the collector system design will be discussed. This will start with a comparison to typical utility distribution systems and the evolution from the early wind farms to current designs. The conditions and design considerations that are unique to collector systems will be discussed, with examples from recent projects. The system interconnection studies that are required for each project will be reviewed, with an explanation of how these studies are largely driven by the collector system design. Finally, some of the construction challenges that are unique to wind farms will be discussed, with some examples of how the industry has addressed those situations.
Bio: Mr. Al Powers got his BS and MS degrees from Iowa State University. Employed as an Engineer and Engineering Manager with Midwest Power and the predecessor company, Iowa Power, an investor owned utility with headquarters in Des Moines that is now known as MidAmerican Energy Co. From 1995 – Present: P & E Engineering Co. Co-founder and former co-owner of P & E Engineering Co. He has Extensive teaching experience in electrical power subjects ranging from basic electricity for adult education courses to the planning and presentation of a graduate level class on distribution engineering. Developed and presented seminars on power system design and operation to a variety of utilities, organizations, institutions, and industry groups. Participated in numerous training sessions and short courses on power system subjects, including harmonics, underground cable, capacitor applications, economics, grounding, overvoltage and overcurrent protection, and EMF concerns. Actively participated in several IEEE committees on industry standards and system operations.
