Title: Cyber-Physical Security and Resiliency for DER-integrated Distribution Grids and Mobile Microgrids

Speaker: Gelli Ravikumar, Iowa State University

Abstract: High penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) has created several new challenges and opportunities for the traditional operation of distribution systems, which are exacerbated by the lack of real-time cyber-physical situational awareness and cybersecurity, especially from behind-the-meter (BTM) PV systems and mobile-microgrids. We are addressing some of these challenges of high DER penetration and mobile microgrids in the ongoing research projects sponsored by the DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office (ASU Lead and ISU Co-Lead) and Iowa Economic Development Authority (ISU Lead). After a brief overview of the major research tasks of these research projects, the talk will focus on three major contributions related to cyber-physical situational awareness and attack-resiliency — (i) an attack-resilient DER cyber-physical system designs, (ii) design and development of edge-intelligent devices (EIDs), and (iii)  real-time monitoring and control of DERs including the advanced grid-support functionality using IEEE 1547-2018 operation modes. The presentation will conclude with real-time demonstrations using our CPS DER testbed and the mobile microgrid (SunCrate).

Bio: Gelli Ravikumar is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University. He currently leads multi-university, multi-industry research projects in cyberinfrastructure and energy infrastructure RD&D sponsored by NSF, IEDA, and DOE. His current research is at the intersection of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and security for distribution and transmission grids, distributed energy resources, next-generation Mobile Microgrids, Machine learning, Cloud computing, and the Industrial internet of things for smart grid infrastructure and industrial control systems. Under the past and current federal- and state-funded projects, he established a strong collaboration with power utilities, the power industry, and the national labs. He designed and built advanced cyber-physical smart grid testbed(s), a research infrastructure integrated with cloud computing, real-time digital simulators, industry-grade hardware relays/PMUs, substation RTUs, SCADA, EMS, ADMS/DERMS, and IIoT devices.
