Title: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Novel Coil Designs for different Neurological Disorders

Abstract: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every four persons in the world is or will be affected by neurological disorder at some point of their lives. Mental disorder is one of the leading causes of ill-health worldwide, contributing to approximately 450 million people who are currently suffering from the same. Although, there are several medications and treatments available worldwide for mental health, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment based on time varying magnetic fields for the Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD). It has been proved that TMS also have therapeutic effect on the several other neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, Schizophrenia, Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Migraine, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Figure-8 coil and Hesed coil are the two coils which have been approved by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of the Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The problem with these coils are that they are only capable of stimulating the cortex and at the same time they stimulate rather large area of the brain then required. Clinicians and basic scientists are interested in stimulating a localized area of the brain, while minimizing the stimulation of surrounding neural networks. Two coils namely Quadruple Butterfly Coil and Triple Halo Coil have been designed and are verified using finite element tool with the help of 50 heterogeneous human head models. The focality of the coil has been further improved with the help of passive magnetic shields.
