Abstract: With the increasing penetration of inverter-based renewables, the inertia of power network continuously reduces, thus intensifying the challenges on ensuring systemstability and safety. Microgrids as localized small-scale power systems, that can operate in both grid-tied and islanded modes, have shown potentials for improving the resilience of power networks. In this seminar, we will firstly introduce the dynamic modeling of inverter-dominated islanded microgrids. Then, for the high-order characteristics and stiffness of the microgrid, a tailored model order reduction approach based on singular perturbation theory is developed to reduce the computational cost and simplify the stability analysis of microgrids. Finally, two secondary voltage control methods are proposed to deal with the transient safety problem and model-free problem based on safe imitation learning and multiple models adaptive control, respectively.

Bio: Zixiao Ma is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Iowa State University, Ames, IA, USA. He received his B.S. degree in Automation and M.S. degree in Control theory and Control Engineering from Northeastern University in 2014 and 2017 respectively. His research interests are focused on the power system load modeling, microgrids, nonlinear control, learning and model reduction.
