Title: Efficient Modeling of Electromagnetic and Acoustic Wave Propagation and Applications

Speaker: Jiming Song, ECpE Associate Professor

Abstract: I will give an overview of the research in my group on modeling electromagnetic and acoustic wave propagation. Then I will present several efficient approaches and their applications. First, I will focus on the integral equation approach developed to analyze the wave propagation in periodic structures, which find a variety of applications in the area of electromagnetics such as frequency selective surfaces, electromagnetic band gap materials, metamaterials, etc. The approach is capable of handling scattering from the array filled with different media in different layers. Combining the equivalence principle algorithm and connection scheme (EPACS), it can be avoided to find and evaluate the multilayered periodic Green’s functions. Then I will talk developing efficient boundary integral equation approach for eddy-current non-destructive evaluations involving the detection of irregularities in an electrically conducting material such as cracks, fasteners, sharp corners/edges, multi-layered structures, etc. Finally, I will present our most recent research results on developing efficient algorithms on acoustic and elastic wave propagation and scattering.
