Title: Role of Operators in Control Centers

Abstract: Operating a power system grid is a 24×7 task and involves various aspects to make the system is running reliably and maintain continuous balance between generation and load. The role of the operator in a control center is always on toes in making sure that the grid is reliable and in stable condition. This talk provide an insight into role of operators in Control Centers.

Biography: Dr. Sarma is currently working at Dominion Energy and is involved in deploying Synchrophasor Technology in its Operations. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Texas A&M University. He had worked for about eight years at the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), Texas, USA, in the Advanced Network Applications Group in its Operation Department. He also worked for a few years at PEAK Reliability and Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) in Austin. He is the editor for the Book on ‘Power System Grid Operation Using Synchrophasor Technology’ by Springer, July 2018 and the book on ‘Use of Voltage Stability Assessment and Transient Stability Assessment Tools in Grid Operations’ by Springer, May 2021. He is very active in the IEEE Working Groups for State Estimation and Smart Distribution Systems. He also led the IEEE Task Force on ‘Real-Time Contingency Analysis’. He is currently the co-chair of the IEEE Task Force on ‘Synchrophasor Applications in Power System Operations and Control’. He is active at the NASPI Working Group meetings and was given North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) Control Room Solutions Task Team (CRSTT) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, October 2015 and CRSTT Volunteer of the Year Award, April 2018, by Department of Energy. He obtained his B.Tech (Electrical) and M.Tech (Power Systems) degrees from National Institute of Technology, Warangal, in 1983 and 1986 respectively and Ph.D. degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1995. He is a senior member of IEEE and a member of IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES).
