Title: Managing Risk in Power System Operations: From Climate Change Mitigation to Climate Change Adaptation

Abstract: The electric grid plays a key role in facilitating the challenging shift towards a more sustainable, less carbon intensive energy supply. At the same time, the grid must adapt to increasingly severe weather conditions driven by climate change. In this talk, I will provide examples from our work on optimal power flow-based methods for both climate change mitigation and adaptation in electric grid operations. In the context of mitigation, we will discuss chance-constrained optimization to manage uncertainty in renewable energy generation. As an example of adaptation, we will discuss interactions between power grids and wildfires, and present a model that minimizes both the risk of wildfire ignitions and the extent of power shut-offs to consumers.

Bio: Line Roald is an Assistant Professor and Grainger Institute Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in University of Wisconsin—Madison. She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (2016) from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Prior to joining UW Madison, she was a postdoctoral research fellow with the Center of Non-Linear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Her research interests center around modeling and optimization of energy systems, with a particular focus on managing uncertainty and risk from renewable energy variability and component failures.
