Title: PMU Data Analytics: Applications and Challenges

Abstract: GEIRI North America (GEIRINA) has developed and implemented a PMU-assisted Power System Parameter Calibration System (PSPCS) at State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company (JEPC), one of the largest provincial power systems in China. Running in the control center, PSPCS collects Synchrophasor measurements in real time from over 160 substations and power plants. Using PSPCS as the data platform, the GEIRINA team is building a wide range of applications, including data mining based data quality assessment, hybrid/HEM-based voltage stability monitoring, oscillation monitoring, distributed algorithms, event triangulation, machine learning based forced oscillation location, and online coherence identification for controlled islanding, etc. This talk gives an overview of GEIRINA’s R&D activities in the area of PMU data analytics, with emphasis given to the different applications built upon PSPCS and the challenges encountered in related areas.

Bio: Di Shi currently leads the PMU & System Analytics Group at GEIRI North America, San Jose, CA, USA. Prior to that, he was a researcher at NEC Laboratories America, Cupertino, CA, and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Palo Alto, CA. He served as Senior/Principal Consultant for eMIT and RM Energy Marketing between 2012-2016. He has published over 60 journal and conference papers and holds 14 US patents/patent applications. He received an IEEE PES General Meeting Best Paper Award in 2017. One Energy Management and Control (EMC) technology he developed has been commercialized in 2014 into product that helps customers achieve significant energy savings. He won the Grand Prix Award of the Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) in 2007.
