Title: A Green Backhaul Network Approach for 5G Networks Without Degrading the Quality of Service

Abstract: 5G is the next generation cellular networks, which is expected to quench the ever-ending thirst of data rates and interconnect billions of smart devices to support not only human centric traffic, but also machine centric traffic. Recent research and standardization work have been addressing requirements and challenges from a radio perspective (e.g., new spectrum allocation, network densification, massive multiple-input-multiple-output antenna, carrier aggregation, inter-cell interference mitigation techniques, and coordinated multi-point processing). In addition, a new network bottleneck has emerged: the backhaul network, which will allow to interconnect and support billions of devices from the core network. Up to 4G cellular networks, the major challenges to meet the backhaul requirements were capacity, availability, deployment cost, and long-distance reach. However, as 5G network capabilities and services added to 4G cellular networks, the backhaul network would face two additional challenges that include ultra-low latency (i.e., 1ms) requirements and ultra-dense small cell deployment. Due to the dense small cell deployment and heavy traffic cells in 5G, 5G backhaul network will need to support hundreds of gigabits of traffic from the core network and today’s cellular backhaul networks are infeasible to meet these requirements in terms of capacity, availability, latency, energy, and cost efficiency. This presentation will first provide an introduction of 5G cellular networks and then, outlines the 5G backhaul requirements and challenges. Finally, this presentation will present a green backhaul network approach for 5G Networks without degrading the quality of service.

Bio: Md Maruf Ahamed received B.Sc. in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from the Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh, in 2010. He received his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND, USA, in 2015 and currently, he is in the process of obtaining his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the same university. Since August 2016, Maruf has been a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Platteville, WI, USA. At UW-Platteville, he teaches undergraduate Electrical and Computer Engineering Courses (e.g., EE3770-Logic and Digital Design, EE3780-Introduction to Microprocessor) and his mission is to engage undergraduate students in research on real-time embedded System Development, high performance computing, digital system design, wireless sensor networks, Vehicular Communication Networks, and Internet of Things (IoT). Based on his research expertise, he has been serving as an active Technical Committee member in several IEEE conferences (e.g., IEEE WTC, IEEE ISICT, and IEEE WTS). In addition, he also works as an external reviewer for several international journals (e.g., IEEE Sensors Journal, Journal of Network and Computer Applications – Elsevier, Wireless Networks-Springer, Wireless Personal Communications-Springer, EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, and Automation in Construction Journal – Elsevier).
