Title: Modeling and Simulation of Modern Power Networks for Harmonic Analysis

Abstract: Power electronic converters (PECs) have become an important part of electrical transmission/distribution networks. Inclusion of PECs in power electrical networks conveys both positive and negative impacts into quality of power. In this tenor, analysis of harmonics in switched networks involving PECs plays a major role to understand power quality phenomena. Besides harmonic distortion, harmonics analysis permits to study potential risks of harmonic resonance, mechanical vibration in transformers, flickering, among others. Simulation of networks involving PECs, aimed at harmonic analysis, requires mathematical models that permit to reproduce network’ dynamics closely to actual components. Such accuracy helps engineers to evaluate power quality issues, e.g., harmonic transient analysis and total harmonic distortion, and to design control algorithms to fulfill the applicable connection codes. Traditionally, switched networks are simulated either using time-domain techniques or averaged-value models. Although precise, the former requires a very small integration time step to account for high-frequency dynamics intrinsic to PECs; the latter, on the other hand, can handle larger time-steps at the cost of averaging high-frequency ripple information. The flexible harmonic domain (FHD) is presented as accurate and efficient mathematical modeling tool for networks that involve PECs. FHD-based models permit to account for major impact harmonics and exhibit desirable features such as reduced simulation times and accurate high-frequency harmonics representation. Some case studies are presented and validated against the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation tool.

Bio: Abner Ramirez received his Ph.D. from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of Mexico (CINVESTAV) Campus Guadalajara, in 2001. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Toronto, Canada, from November 2001 to January 2005. His main interests are harmonic analysis of modern power networks, computation of dynamic equivalents, and electromagnetic transient analysis in power systems.
