Title: Resource Adequacy While Grid Transition Towards Carbon-Neutral Electricit

Abstract: Decarbonizing electric power generation would lead to achieving major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. This, however, needs to be accomplished in a timely fashion while maintaining reliability that the customers have got used to. The planning process for such a change is critical. The current planning practices for resource adequacy are based on firm capacity resources. The introduction of renewable resources and resources like storage and demand response are game changers.  This talk takes an “electric grid-centric” viewpoint and discusses some of the issues that need to be understood and solved for a successful transition so that reliability of the grid at various levels can be maintained.

Bio: Chanan Singh is a University Distinguished Professor, Regents Professor and Irma Runyon Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA. He served as the Department Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering Texas A & M from 1997 to 2005 and then as an Interim Head from 2012 to 2015. He also served as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation of USA and a Guest Professor at Tsinghua University. His research and consulting interests are in the foundational developments and applications of probabilistic methods for planning and operation of electric power grid. He has authored/co-authored numerous technical papers and four books and has contributed to several books. He has also developed and contributed to computer programs for reliability evaluation used by the power industry. He has consulted with many major corporations and given short courses nationally and internationally.

Dr. Singh is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and Fellow of Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering. He is the recipient of the 1998 Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award given by the IEEE Power Engineering Society. For his research contributions, he was awarded a D.Sc. degree by the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada, in 1997. He was recognized with the Merit Award by the PMAPS International Society for lifelong achievements. He is the inaugural recipient of the IEEE-PES Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award and the IEEE-PES Lifetime Achievement Award.
