Title: Toward Quantum Information Science and Engineering with Rare Earths

Abstract: The increasing technological importance of rare-earth based magnetic quantum information materials is attracting the attention of scientists from all over the world. We have great challenges ahead in terms experimental synthesis and measurements as well as fundamental theoretical and computational understandings of these materials. We present here a survey of the systematic theoretical and computational research on rare earth based materials for current permanent magnet and solid-state energy conversion applications performed over the years employing advanced density functional theory and finite-temperature magneto-thermodynamic models. Moving forward, we then present an outlook of artificial intelligence aided quantum materials predictions and progress made toward quantum information science with rare earth element based quantum materials.

Bio: Durga Paudyal is an associate scientist at Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University. Formerly, he was a postdoctoral research associate and an assistant scientist at the same location. His research experience is in the field of rare earth magnetism, including permanent magnets, magnetocaloric effect, quantum materials, and quantum information science. He has more than 80 publications in reputed journals and has given more than 30 invited presentations and panel discussions for various conferences; he has been the principal investigator for various basic science and applied science projects. Paudyal is an editorial board member for Frontiers of Quantum Materials and Materials Science and a regular member of the American Physical Society. He received his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Computational Materials Physics from S. N. Bose National Center for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India, in 2005.
