Title: Entrepreneurship and the Startup Factory

Bio: David P. Spalding is the fifth dean of the Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University. Before arriving in Ames in August 2013, he served for eight years at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Most recently, Spalding served as senior vice president and senior advisor to Dartmouth’s president, responsible for implementing strategy, vision, and direction for the institution. Previously he had served as the president’s chief of staff. Spalding was appointed as Dartmouth’s vice president for alumni relations in October 2005, his first position in higher education. In this role, he led the school’s efforts to increase engagement with its nearly 70,000 alumni. Also a Dartmouth alumnus, he had served as a member of Dartmouth’s President’s Leadership Council. Before Dartmouth, he had a 29-year career in finance in New York City. He was most recently vice chairman of The Cypress Group LLC, a firm that he co-founded and co-managed. The Cypress Group is a private equity firm which managed funds totaling $3.5 billion. Prior to co-founding Cypress, he served as a senior vice president and then a managing director of Lehman Brothers. He began his career in New York with The Chase Manhattan Bank NA. He also was a vice president with The First National Bank of Chicago and a senior vice president with GE Capital Corporate Finance Group Inc. He received an AB in history cum laude in 1976 from Dartmouth and a master’s of business administration in finance from New York University in 1984.
