Title: Wavelength Management in Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexed PONs (TWDM-PONs)

Speaker: Weiqiang Sun,  associate professor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Abstract: Energy efficiency has long been an important design consideration in Passive Optical Networks. Over the years, significant efforts have been seen in reducing the power consumption on the user side equipments, i.e.,  Optical Network Units. As the capacity of PONs are increasing in terms of the number of wavelength channels and the line-rate, it is equally important to improve the power efficiency on the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) side. In this presentation, I will introduce our ongoing efforts in reducing the cost and power consumption of the OLTs, by introducing dynamic wavelength management and switching. Our results show that under typical ONU online profiles, the proposed dynamic wavelength management schemes can reduce up to 70% power consumption, without bringing in significant loss in ONU availability.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Weiqiang Sun is currently an associate professor in the department of electronic engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Dr. Sun is actively involved in the research of dynamically configured optical networks, network control and management, and network applications. He has about 60 publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences. He has been actively involved in the standardization of Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) performance measurement in IETF, and is the co-editor of RFC 6777 and RFC 5814. He has served as an invited speaker on many international conferences and is member of Technical Program Committee of COIN, GreenTouch, PGC and organizer of the Sino-Korea Workshop on IPTV and NGN (2007-2010).
