Title: Personally and Socially Actionable Big Data

Speaker: Vivek Singh, post-doctoral researcher, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Abstract: Today there are trillions of data points observing human beings as they go about their natural lives. This creates an unprecedented opportunity to integrate, visualize, and analyze these data to understand natural phenomena and human processes at scales and resolution not possible before. This work defines models, processes, and practical systems that can be used to combine layers of heterogeneous real-time data to recognize emerging situations and define interventions at personal, societal, and planetary scales. Specifically, I present a framework that allows domain experts to model different situations of interest, and a generic set of operators that can be used detect complex situations by deriving and integrating characteristics from multiple spatio-temporal data streams. I discuss how these situations can be personalized via rich real-world behavioral data to support personalized interventions, and finally how these data can be combined to understand community dynamics and devise social interventions. The results of this work have already been applied for multiple applications including providing personalized health recommendations for asthmatic users, promoting healthy behavior via interventions by trusted peers, and guiding stranded users towards their nearest shelters during hurricane Sandy.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Vivek Singh is a post-doctoral researcher working with the Human Dynamics group at the MIT Media Lab. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine. He obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in Computer Science/Engineering from the National University of Singapore and was a full-time Lecturer at the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore for 4 years. His work has been presented at multiple leading venues and received two best paper awards. He was selected as one of the ‘Emerging leaders in multimedia research’ by IBM Research Labs in 2009 and he recently won the ‘Big Data for Social Good’ datathon organized by Telefónica, the Open Data Institute and the MIT. His research interests lie at the intersection of Big Data, Social Computing, and Multimedia Information Systems.
