Title: Intellectual Property Law Primer: An Introduction to Intellectual Property and Why It is Important to You

Speaker: Tyson Benson, Intellectual Property Attorney, Advent LLP

Abstract: This seminar will provide a brief overview of the different types of intellectual property and why it is important to you and your research.  Intellectual property can refer to patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.  For some companies, most of their value may reside in intellectual property.  For example, an issued patent provides a patent owner the rights to exclude a third party from making, selling, importing, and using the claimed invention for a limited period of time.   Additionally, many engineers may find themselves filing patent applications in the near future related to their university research or their work done on behalf of a business or corporation.  This seminar will provide an overview of the various types of intellectual property and potential opportunities available to engineers in intellectual property.
