Ames, Iowa – Computer engineering senior Cory Simon, who’s originally from Winterset, Iowa, recently won three university awards: the first Sesquicentennial Learning to Live a Life Leadership Award, Senior Leadership Recognition Award, and the Dean’s Student Leadership Award.
The Sesquicentennial Learning to Live a Life Leadership Award is given to a student who has taken advantage of opportunities at Iowa State University to apply his or her knowledge to real-life projects and experiences. During four internships with NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, Simon helped create and test equipment for astronauts and received awards that previously had been awarded only to permanent staff at the center.
The Senior Leadership Recognition Award is sponsored by the Senior Class Council and ISU Alumni Association. It recognizes up to 10 graduating seniors at Iowa State who have dedicated their energy and talents to improving campus life at Iowa State, participated in a variety of on- and off-campus experiences, and demonstrated growth and learning in leadership and community service.
The Dean’s Student Leadership Award recognizes exemplary leadership by juniors or seniors in one or more major college, university, community, or professional organizations. Simon has participated in several student organizations, including Eta Kapp Nu, the computer engineering honor society; Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society; the National Society of Collegiate Scholars; Robotics Club; and Sailing Club. He also has volunteered his time in the community with Habitat for Humanity, mentored youth, and visited his hometown high school to spark other students’ interests in computer engineering.
