Why We Chose ISU

I chose Iowa State because it is a great school for students who want to major in engineering and because I was offered the George Washington Carver four-year full-tuition scholarship. I knew Iowa State was the school I wanted to attend after my campus visit. Everyone I spoke with was so friendly and seemed to be happy here. It felt like home and there were many support systems available. View video.

I chose Iowa State for several reasons. My parents graduated from Iowa State in the early 1980s and I have been going to Iowa State basketball and football games for as long as I can remember. The last few years of high school I was pretty sure I wanted to go into electrical engineering and I liked the chance to go to a nationally known program in a community where I already felt comfortable. All that, along with the in-state tuition rates, were too good to pass up.

I had the opportunity to visit during Preview Day weekend, and after that, I felt Iowa State was a place where I could succeed. Even though it’s a research institution, I felt there was an emphasis on teaching the material, and that professors are accessible and the work load stresses quality over quantity.

I chose Iowa State because I wanted to go to a school that offered a wide variety of opportunities and allowed me the flexibility to do what I wanted. I have studied abroad in Spain and Austria, worked as an engineering intern, participated in many clubs and organizations, studied Spanish and International Studies, and been a part of the Greek system. It’s been a fun experience so far!

When you’re in high school and you plan to go to college, one of the first places you start your search for good colleges is browsing through US News & World Report’s college rankings. Iowa State was, and still is, ranked in the top 40 colleges in the States and that caught my attention. I also considered the cost of attending college. A combination of these factors led me to decide to attend Iowa State.
