Degree and Major Changes

Disability Accommodations

If you have a disability and require accommodations, please contact the instructor early in the semester so that your learning needs may be appropriately met. You will need to provide documentation of your disability to the Disability Resources (DR) office, located on the main floor of the Student Services Building, Room 1076, 515-294-7220.

Changing your major or modifying your academic program by adding a minor or major both involve important academic and life decisions, and should not be entered into lightly. If you are considering any of these changes, you should talk with your advisor, family and friends, or even career counselors.

Changing Majors

If you are considering changing your major, complete the following steps:

Step	Action
1	Do some research. Start by making a list of possible new majors. View websites to find information and degree requirements, and talk to advisors and students in your areas of interest. Discuss your ideas with friends and family. If you are completely uncertain about which majors might interest you, visit the Career Exploration Program.
2	Talk with your advisor. Be prepared to discuss the reasons for your proposed major change. Student athletes must also consult with their athletic advisor.
3	Complete the required paperwork for changing your major.

Double Majors/Degrees

If you are considering a double major or degree, complete the following steps:

Step	Action
1	Find information about your proposed additional major/degree and its requirements. Important sources of information include the web, advisors for the program, and the catalog. Reading the Double Major/Curriculum section in the ISU Catalog may also be helpful.
2	Talk with your advisor. Be prepared to discuss your reasons for adding the major/degree, and how your multiple majors/degrees might overlap. You must meet all of the requirements for both programs.
3	Complete the form for declaring the second major or degree with your advisor.

Minors

If you are considering adding one or more minors, complete the following steps:

Step	Action
1	Find information about your proposed minor and its requirements. Important sources of information include the web, advisors for the program, and the catalog. Reading the Declaring a Minor section in the ISU Catalog may also be helpful. NOTE: The only minor in the College of Engineering is in Non-Destructive Evaluation. Engineering departments do not have minors.
2	Talk with your advisor. Be prepared to discuss your reasons for declaring the minor, and how the minor might overlap with your major. The total number of credits required for a minor varies by department, but the university requires that nine of those credits must be applied to the minor only.
3	Complete the form for declaring the minor with your advisor.
