ECpE Professor Vikram Dalal, a proponent of solar energy usage since the early 1970s, is working with a team of three scientists, 11 graduate students, and four undergraduate students on low-cost solar panels that building contractors can use in residential and commercial structures. The state of Iowa, Iowa State's Microelectronics Research Center, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation support the work. Read more.
In 1971, Iowa State engineering graduate student David Nicholas invented the digital encoding process that led to the development of the first generation of low-cost FAX machines.
